It's an expression that contains a radical (in this case, a square root).

what does it mean to simplify radical expressions?

• The number has no perfect-square factors other than 1

• The variables that are in pairs are taken out of the root

what do we need to know?

• For the numbers, you will need to find and factor out any perfect squares. When you "take them out," you will take their square root.

• For the variables, you can take out any pair of variables (such as x squared). When you "take them out," take their square root (i.e., divide the power by 2).
