How do we add and subtract radical expressions?

Basically, it's like combining like terms for variables. You can only combine radicals if they have the same radicand (thing under the radical).

what If they don't have the same radicand?

• It could be that you can't add or subtract them (like if you had 4x + 5y)

• Or, you can use your simplifying skills from last week to make them have the same radicand (which is only sometimes possible)
