What is the Law of Detachment?
Given a true conditional, the following is true:
If the hypothesis is true for a given situation, then the conclusion is also true.
Let's look at some examples:
Conditional: If Simon uses his phone at school, then he will have to pay Finn $5000.
Fact: Simon uses his phone at school.
Conclusion:
Conditional: If a figure has four sides, then it is a quadrilateral.
Fact: A figure has four sides.
Conclusion:
Conditional: If it is snowing, then Gwen wears a stocking cap.
Fact: Gwen is wearing a stocking cap.
Conclusion:
What is the Law of Syllogism?
If p --> q is true, and if q --> r is true, then p --> r is true. In other words, if you have two true conditionals, and the conclusion of one is the hypothesis of the other, you can go directly from the first hypothesis to the second conclusion.
Let's look at some examples:
Conditional 1: If Bernoulli is at school, then he is hungry.
Conditional 2: If Bernoulli is hungry, then he screams.
Conclusion:
Conditional 1: If today is Tuesday, then tomorrow is Wednesday.
Conditional 2: If tomorrow is Wednesday, then the day after tomorrow is Oxford Thursday.
Conclusion:
Conditional: If you do gymnastics, then you are flexible.
Fact: If you do ballet, then you are flexible.
