Here is how it works:
Draw a vertical line that goes through the equal sign. This separates the two halves of your equation.
Any step you do should be done to BOTH sides of the equation.
Under each step, draw a horizontal line, then "do the math" to write the new form of the equation.
Each term should be written UNDERNEATH the term it came from.
Show each step. Keep your work neat and organized. One step per line.
With a partner, try the following problems. As you work, take turns switching between the following roles:
Scribe - this partner is writing down each step using the vertical line method
Narrator - this partner is explaining out loud what is happening in each step and why
"Next, we will divide both sides by 6 because division is the opposite of multiplication."
"The first step is to draw a vertical line through the equals sign to separate the two halves of the equation."
