So, what are we making?
We are making a collaborative piece of art. Each of us will create a 12x12 square, and we will put them together to create a larger piece.
As we apply what we've learned about Geometric drawing to an artistic application, we will be considering two things: The Elements of Art and the Principals of Art.
Elements of Art
If we were cooking, the elements of art would be like the "ingredients." To cook great food, you need great ingredients. The same is true for art. The elements of art are:
Line
Shape
Form
Value
Space
Color
We will focus in on a couple of these ingredients for our pieces:
Line: we will be using lots of lines made with the compass and straight edge. We want these lines to be high-quality (straight, drawn without extra marks, visible, consistent).
Shape: our lines will form shapes! Some of those shapes will be required by the project, others will be chosen by you.
Color: We will use particular color groups for each of our parts. We will be intentional about the colors we choose, and apply those colors carefully and evenly.
Principals of Art
If we were cooking, the principals of art would be like the "recipe." To cook great food, the ingredients need to be combined carefully and intentionally. The principals of art are:
Repetition
Balance
Contrast
Proportion
Gradation
Harmony
Variety
Movement
We will focus in on a couple of these principals for our pieces:
Repetition: to make sure all of our separate parts work together, some elements will be the same for each piece.
Balance: we will carefully use both symmetry and asymmetry in our work to create balance.
Gradation: our pieces will have similarities, and we will use gradation to create difference. The pieces will slowly change color as we move down the line. Within each piece, we will use gradations of the same color.
We will discuss more of the specifics over the next days, but here is what we will start with today:
Use this template to start planning your design
Requirements:
In the center of left and right sides of your piece, there must be a half circle with radius of 1.5 inches
Somewhere in your design, there must be an equilateral triangle with sides that are 2 inches. It can be turned in any direction, but cannot be intersected by anything else.
You must include either a circumscribed or inscribed triangle
You must include at least one special triangle (30-60-90 or 45-45-90)
You must use at least 3 perpendicular lines
You must use at least 3 angle bisectors
You must have at least 1 set of parallel lines
Let's watch this video about the elements and principals of art while we begin our designs:
