Find a piece of paper, make a triangle, and cut it out. Make sure it has three straight sides and is fairly large.
With your triangle, label the largest angle C, and the other two angles A and B.
Fold A onto C to find the midpoint of AC.
Fold B onto C to find the midpoint of BC.
Label the midpoint of AC as L, and the midpoint of BC as N.
Connect L and N to create LN.
Fold C back onto AB, then fold A and B to D.
Label the bottom corners M and P.
What is the relationship between MP and AB? What about LN and AB?
What do I need to know about midsegments?
A midsegment is a line inside of a triangle that connects that midpoint of two sides.
Let's do some examples:
What are the three pairs of parallel segments in this figure?
In triangle XYZ, A is the midpoint of XY. B is the midpoint of YZ. C is the midpoint of ZX. What are the three pairs of parallel segments?
What is the measure of angle VUO in this figure? How do you know?
T, U, and B are midpoints. What are the lengths of TU, UB, and QR?
What's the distance across the sinkhole?
Complete these problems for a 3 (back for a 4!)
