What is the slope of the line that passes through (2, 7) and (1, -3)?
LEARNING TARGET
I can calculate the slope of a line by looking at a graph.
I DO
what are some of the ways we've learned to describe slope?
How do we find the slope of a line by looking at a graph?
STEP 1: Draw a right triangle that connects two points on the line. (It can be any two points, but the problem will be easier if you pick two points that are as close together as possible.)
STEP 2: Label the lengths of those lines to find your "rise" and your "run."
STEP 3: Write your formula, replacing "rise" and "run" with the numbers you found, and reduce if necessary.
STEP 4: Determine the sign of your slope by looking at the line.
