I can graph equations written in slope-intercept form.

Today, we are doing the opposite of what we did yesterday.

Yesterday, we looked at a graph and wrote an equation. Today, we are looking at an equation and drawing a graph.

How do you do that?

Here are the steps:

1. Look at the equation and identify the y-intercept (b).

What is the y-intercept if there is no b? For example, y = 2x ?

2. Put a point at the y-intercept (on the y-axis)

3. Look at the equation and identify the slope (m).

What about y = x + 3? What about y = 4? What about x = 2?

4. Use the "rise over run" to find another point starting from the y-intercept.

What is the rise over run if the slope is a whole number?

Make sure you go in the right direction!

Positive slope: up and right OR down and left

Negative slope: down and right OR up and left

Let's do some examples!

y = 2x + 1

y = -2/3x - 2

y = 1/2x

y = -3

x = 1

Let's do this:

1. Everyone write down an equation in slope-intercept form (y = ___x + ___)

2. Tell your neighbor your equation, and describe the following to them:

   1. Where does your line cross the y-axis?

   2. What way does your line slant?

   3. What is the rise over run? Which directions would you go?
