How do you draw a line that is parallel to another line through a given point?
METHOD 1: The Angle Method
Draw a line that connects the point to the line, forming an acute angle
Draw an arc that intersects both lines between the two points using the intersection of the two lines as the vertex
Using the same compass setting, draw an arc from the other point (the given point)
Set your compass width using the two intersections of the first arc
Using the same compass setting, make a mark on the second arc
Draw the parallel line!
METHOD 2: The Rhombus Method
Draw a circle using the point as the center that intersects the line in two places
Use the same compass setting to draw an arc on the line from the endpoint of the original line
Use this new intersection to create another arc using the same compass setting that intersects the circle
Connect the point to the last intersection to create the parallel line
Try this with a neighbor using these steps. You will need to create a line and a point (as shown in the first step) on your own paper.
