Recap Previous Lessons: Briefly review key concepts from previous lessons related to skills in individual sports (e.g., dribbling, passing, shooting, etc.).
Discussion: Ask learners:
“Can anyone recall a time when they successfully combined different skills in a game?”
“What do you think it means to apply strategies in a competitive situation?”
Purpose: This will allow students to reflect on previous learning and set the stage for new concepts.
2. Activate - Tutor Giving New Knowledge (20 minutes)
Objective: Introduce new concepts related to combining skills and techniques, as well as strategies for competitive gameplay.
Content Delivery:
Combining Skills and Techniques for Effective Gameplay:
Theory: Explain how integrating skills (e.g., passing, dribbling, shooting) during gameplay makes players more versatile and unpredictable. Highlight the importance of fluid transitions between skills.
Visual Examples: Show clips from a variety of sports (e.g., football, basketball, tennis) where players integrate different skills seamlessly (e.g., a football player who dribbles, feints, and shoots, or a basketball player executing a fast break and lay-up).
Link to Strategy: Discuss how players can use combinations of skills to create opportunities, deceive opponents, and make decisions quickly.
Strategies for Applying Skills in Competitive Situations:
Theory: Explain how players should apply specific strategies depending on the competitive context. Discuss different strategies such as:
Offensive strategies: When and how to press, attack, or counter.
Defensive strategies: When to defend, intercept, or block.
Transition strategies: How to move quickly from defense to attack.
Key Point: Emphasise that a good strategy is always fluid and adaptable to the situation.
3. Demonstrate - Learners Completing Tasks (30 minutes)
Objective: Allow learners to apply and demonstrate their knowledge by completing tasks that integrate skills and techniques, as well as develop strategies for competitive play.
Activities:
Worksheet 9A: Combining Skills and Techniques
Task: Distribute Worksheet 9A where students complete the scenarios that ask them to identify skills and techniques needed for different game situations. Each scenario requires learners to think about how they would combine skills (e.g., dribbling, shooting, passing) and apply them in a gameplay context.
Goal: This task allows learners to demonstrate their ability to identify and combine different skills into gameplay situations.
Peer Review and Feedback (Worksheet 9B):
Task: Once learners have completed the scenarios, pair them up and ask them to perform the tasks in small groups or pairs. While one student performs the integrated skills and techniques, the other uses the Peer Review Checklist (Worksheet 9B) to provide constructive feedback on the integration of skills and the application of strategies.
Goal: This peer review session promotes reflection and learning, allowing students to both assess their own performance and provide constructive feedback to others. It also encourages learners to consider strategies in action.
4. Consolidate - Review of the Lesson and Objectives (10 minutes)
Objective: Review the key concepts learned in the lesson, reflect on students' performances, and assess understanding of the learning objectives.
Activity:
Class Discussion:
Reflect with the class on the importance of combining skills and applying strategies in competitive gameplay. Ask questions like:
“What combinations of skills do you find most effective during a game?”
“How did the strategies you applied help you perform better in your competitive scenarios?”
Encourage learners to share specific examples from the task where they successfully integrated skills and applied strategies.
Review of Learning Objectives:
Recap the learning objectives:
“Today, we’ve learned how to combine different skills into gameplay and apply strategies effectively. Can anyone explain how you integrated skills into your gameplay today?”
Ask learners to explain the strategies they used and how they adapted their techniques based on the situation.
Quick Reflection:
Ask learners to write down:
One thing they found challenging during the lesson.
One strategy or skill they would like to practice further.
This can be done individually or as a group reflection at the end of the class.
Worksheets: Worksheet 9A (Combining Skills and Techniques) and Worksheet 9B (Peer Review Checklist).
Visual Aids: Clips or images showing examples of skills integration and strategies in sports.
Writing Materials: Paper, pens, and any materials for students to make notes during reflection or peer feedback.
Ongoing assessment during activities: Observe students as they work through the tasks, paying attention to how well they integrate skills and apply strategies.
Peer Feedback: Use the Peer Review Checklist to assess how well students are giving and receiving feedback on their integrated performance.
Reflection: Assess understanding based on students’ ability to explain strategies and skills during the consolidation phase.
Worksheet
SP7.10 Combining Skills and Techniques
Assessment:
