Position: Youth Program Assistant/Intern
(Ongoing Volunteer or Internship Opportunity )
Location: Charlotte, NC (Hybrid)
Position Description: The Program Assistant will play a crucial role in the smooth and effective operations of GenerationNation youth programs, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Council, Student Advisor to the Board of Education, and Youth Lead. This individual will provide administrative, logistical, and programmatic support to the youth members, youth leadership team, and GenerationNation staff. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, able to work both independently and as part of a team, and passionate about developing a new generation of civic leaders.
Responsibilities:
Supporting assigned youth programs and youth council meetings (typically held on Wednesday early evenings)
Assist with virtual meetings, helping youth members navigate platforms including Zoom and providing other assigned supports
Assist with meeting and program setup and breakdown, including assisting with materials, technology, and other support for both in person and virtual programming
Take notes and track action items
Create visuals and social media posts for sharing about the youth council’s work
Maintain and organize related program files and communications
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent
Active current enrollment in college, community college, or graduate program
Experience in a youth council, student government, or leadership preferred
Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency with G Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.) and virtual meeting platforms (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams)
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
A strong commitment to the mission of GenerationNation
Availability to consistently attend youth council meetings
Must successfully pass a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) volunteer background screening
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
Occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds (e.g., boxes of materials, event supplies)
Time Commitment: Hours: 3-5 hours per week, mix of virtual and in person and required attendance at youth programs and youth council meetings (usually held on Wednesday early evenings)
Work period: September 2 - December 19, 2025; potential to extend work into 2026
Compensation: Stipend of $1,000 paid on successful completion of work period (16 weeks)

Position: Civic Literacy and Leadership Facilitator

Position Summary: The Civic Literacy and Leadership Facilitator will work with GenerationNation to facilitate civic literacy education in Charlotte-Mecklenburg and other locations in North Carolina. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, able to work both independently and as part of a team, and passionate about developing a new generation of civic leaders.
Major projects may include:
Create/edit educational civics and student leadership materials including curriculum, alignment to NC standards, and digital tools
Research and identify additional best-practice curriculum resources for sharing among the teacher and student networks
Help to integrate digital tools and technology into existing educational resources
Assist with student civic literacy instruction and hands-on activities (usually late afternoons, evenings, and on CMS early release day or workdays)
Assist with creation and implementation of civic literacy professional learning community, professional development sessions, and related materials
Develop and maintain network of school/teacher contacts
Assist with periodic teacher, student, and partner communications and outreach
Help to inform school and other related audiences about GenerationNation’s programs and work
Brainstorming, strategy and planning to move GenerationNation’s civic literacy programming forward
As needed, support GenerationNation programs and organizational priorities

Position: NC Civics Coalition Project Coordinator
(Ongoing Volunteer or Internship Opportunity )
Location: Charlotte, NC (Hybrid)
(Mix of virtual and in person attendance at designated programs)
Position Summary: The Civic Education Project Coordinator works with GenerationNation staff to develop and implement projects and initiatives, including the NC Civics Coalition and other civics projects, to further civic education in North Carolina. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, able to work both independently and as part of a team, and passionate about developing a new generation of civic leaders.
Major projects may include:
Maintain NC3 resources and information including list of NC civics programs
Regularly research and track information about NC-focused civics programs (curriculum, student learning opportunities, teacher PD, etc.)
Highlight relevant civic education news, events, and programming to share on the website, Substack, and in social media
Develop and maintain database of NC school districts and charter schools and key contacts for each (Google Sheets)
Maintain database of NC legislators and other officials with roles connected to K-12 education; assist with legislative outreach, policy, and other initiatives
Assist with NC3 communications including website updates, social media posts, general email updates, and other communications to inform targeted audiences about NC3
Support planned and new NC3 initiatives including Civic Learning Week, America 250, and NC Civic Seal
Provide support as needed to Steering Committee, K-12 Members, and other stakeholders and associated meetings
Monitor news and updates from other state civics coalitions and CivXNow, the national coalition for K-12 civic learning
Attend designated civic education events (schedule permitting)
