Needs Assessment

Part of the mission of the Telescope Network is to find out what BPS educators want and need to learn next in order to best serve the needs of their students.

"I think the Telescope Network is awesome. I really appreciate how y'all gather information FROM educators to customize PD experiences FOR us."

March 2020 Needs Assessment Report

(March 2020) Thank you to the 200+ educators from 78 schools who took our Needs Assessment Survey over the past week. You told us how we can support educators and families in this new learning climate. Here is our preliminary report. Two big headlines:

  • 69% said that they are willing to help other educators in some way.

  • 55% said that they have no “bright spots” or people to turn to for collaboration right now.

With this, our two big themes for the next few weeks are finding ways for teachers to connect and share with each other.

March 2020 Survey

What do you need? The Telescope Network wants to help. The school closures for COVID-19 present a new set of teaching and learning challenges and opportunities. Please fill out this survey to help us better understand how we can support teachers and families in this new learning climate. The results of this survey will be used to help create professional learning opportunities for teachers and others. Admin, parents, and students are welcome to take the survey, too! We’re in this together.

Needs Assessment Report 2018-19

Below is a summary of our Needs Assessment Survey data from 2018-19.

Needs Assessment Survey Questions

We began the year by asking teachers across BPS these questions:

  1. What’s one thing you WANT to learn this year?

  2. What’s one thing you feel you NEED to learn this year?

  3. What’s one thing your STUDENTS WANT you to learn this year?

  4. What’s one thing a TYPICAL TEACHER at your school might benefit from learning?

  5. From the list above (or from elsewhere) what’s a question/challenge/problem of practice that you’d like to address together with colleagues?

Coding and Analyzing Responses

Next we sorted the data to pull out keywords. We also coded the data, linking each code to the DESE Teacher Rubric and the BPS Essentials.

Big Trends

  • Cognitively Demanding Tasks: Most popular tag. Includes lots of people interested in literacy and project based learning.

  • Safe and Healthy Learning Environment: People are interested in responses to trauma, SEL, and creating positive classroom environments.

  • Differentiation/Meeting Diverse Needs: Many people asking about inclusion, modifications/accommodations, and also asking about supporting language learners in different contexts.

  • Curriculum & Planning: Several calls for vertical alignment, getting a chance to understand what the learning looks like from elementary to high school. Our Learning Site at the McKay also focused on this and was well-attended.

  • Faculty Culture and Collaboration: This one emerged later in the year. People want to work on building more cohesive teams and departments, and teacher sustainability/avoiding burnout.

Next Steps

  • Big Picture: We want to name district-wide trends to inform the professional learning agenda for the district.

  • Medium Picture: We want to find trends across different subgroups (ex: all math teachers, all Brighton HS teachers) and examine interconnected interests.

  • Small Picture: We want to help individual teachers find colleagues and learning experiences that align with their interests.
