Recommended Group Size
10+ persons
3+ per team
Estimated Time
15+ minutes
Purpose
To learn to work together as a team rather than individually
Objective
To list as many words related to the topic as quickly as possible
Materials
Paper
Pen or pencil (1 per participant)
Bell/Timer (optional)
Procedure
Split the participants into at least 3 different teams with at least 3 people in each.
Give each participant a paper and a pen/pencil.
The facilitator will announce a category, and all participants will try to write as many things in that category as possible within 1 minute. 1
Participants may not talk during this minute.
Participants may look only to the left or the right to copy down answers from their teammates.
Once the time is up, the facilitator will signal the participants to stop, and everyone must raise their paper in the air.
Any participants who continue to write are disqualified for the current round.
Each team will then choose the team member with the LEAST number of things written down on his/her paper. Only the things written on that person’s piece of paper will count for the round.
This means each team should only have one piece of paper representing them.
One team at a time, the owner of the paper chosen from step 5 will share the answers that he/she has.
If another team has the same answer, someone from that team will say, “Got it,” or something along those lines, to signal the team that is currently sharing their answers.
All teams with that answer must now cross out that answer.
As long as two or more teams share the same answer, that answer is disqualified.
After every team has shared their answers, each team will then count up the number of answers left that were not crossed out. That is how many points each team will receive for that round.
Repeat steps 3 - 8 as time allows. The team with the most points at the end wins.
Lesson
After the activity, share with the participants that in a team, it is only as strong as its weakest link. It’s not about one person putting in all the effort, but every individual on a team trying his/her best to succeed. Good teamwork requires relying on each other, and not just yourself.
Devotional Lesson - Have the participants also read 1 Corinthians 12:12 - 26, with the key verses being 24b - 26. In this activity, if one person does poorly, the whole team does poorly. In the same way, if one part of the body of Christ does poorly (or suffers), the whole body does poorly (or suffers) with it. Everyone needs to do well, not just a few people.
Notes
The point is to get as many unique answers as possible, but writing more obvious answers can help to counter other teams.
1 If the validity of an answer needs to be checked, the facilitator and/or participants can refer to a Bible (or the hymn book if applicable).
