Recommended Group Size
4+ persons
2+ per team
Estimated Time
30 minutes
Purpose
To emphasize the importance of working together
Objective
To create as many good drawings as possible
Materials
Pen or pencil (1 per participant)
Scissors (optional) 1
Paper
Bell/Timer (optional)
Procedure
The facilitator will divide the participants into groups if needed.
Each group will receive a pair of scissors 1 (or two, up to the facilitator), pens/pencils, and 5 pieces of paper.
The facilitator will show one drawing to everyone. (see attached picture for examples).
The goal is for each group to draw as many copies of that drawing until time is up 2.
Each paper can only have one picture.
One participant will need to cut or rip the paper into smaller pieces for the rest of the group to draw on.
Each participant in a group must draw the whole picture individually.
After the time is up, the facilitator will check each group’s drawings. If any drawings are imperfect compared to the original shown by the facilitator, then they will not count toward the group’s score.
The facilitator should be picky about good and bad drawings, but consistent at the same time, as it will help with the activity as a whole.
After counting up the score for the good drawings for each group, repeat the activity again, but this time the groups have to make an assembly line.
Each participant in a group can only draw a certain part of the picture.
The facilitator will first give the groups a short time to plan out what each person will draw. Then the groups will have the same amount of time as the first round to make good drawings.
Repeat step 5.
Once the scores for each group has been calculated, the facilitator will have the groups compare to see which method worked better.
Hopefully the assembly line method proved to create more good drawings to emphasize the importance of working together rather than individually.
At the end, have each group discuss what they learned about this activity.
Notes
1 Without scissors, participants can either rip the paper or the facilitator can provide the ripped paper beforehand.
2 The time limit is up to the facilitator. Around 3 minutes is adequate time.
