Recommended Group Size
25+ persons
Estimated Time
25 minutes
Purpose
To get to know people through interacting with them
Objective
To form as many words as you can with other people
Procedure
Designate a facilitator, who will write on the whiteboard or control the projected slides, and a photographer. They should stand together at a designated location.
Distribute two different letters to each participant.
Each participant will tape one letter on each hand or arm where it is visible (see attached picture)
The participants must form words with each other that relate to a theme or subject of the facilitator’s choosing.
Once the participants form a valid word, they must find the photographer and facilitator.
The facilitator verifies that the word is valid, and writes the word on the whiteboard or projects it on the screen, while the photographer takes the group’s picture.
Once a word has been written or projected, the word may not be used again, by any group, for the duration of the round or activity.
After the photographer takes the picture, the group can move to another area. Then, each group member introduces him or herself to the group by answering one or more icebreaker questions designated by the facilitator (see Example Icebreaker Questions).
Once each group member has introduced him or herself, the group disperses and participants seek other people to form different words.
Materials
Letters on paper (see ‘Icebreaker Cutouts’ attachment)
Tape Camera, or phone with a built-in camera
Whiteboard and markers, or a projector
Notes
The facilitator must brainstorm possible words that fit the theme or subject of the activity to determine which letters and how many per letter to include in the game (see ‘Word Scrambler Data’ document). The more words, the better.
It helps to alphabetize the list of “created” words so participants can quickly see if a word has been taken or not.
