Recommended Group Size
25+ persons
Estimated Time
20+ Minutes
Purpose
To learn more about others
Objective
To give your letter to as many people as possible
Materials
Notecards
Pen or pencil (1 per participant)
Projector (optional)
Bell/Timer (optional)
Procedure
The facilitator hands a notecard and a pen or pencil to each participant.
Each participant will then choose a letter of the alphabet in their head.
The facilitator will announce/project the “contagion” question, which the participants will share with each person they meet.
Participants will then proceed to talk with as many people as possible within the time limit.
Participants should do a basic introduction if applicable. The facilitator may provide a set of basic introductory questions for reference.
If not, they may go directly to answering the “contagion” question.
After sharing the “contagion” question, participants will each write their own chosen letter on the other person's notecard.
The participants must write the same letter for each person they talk with.
Repeating letters are acceptable on the note cards because some participants may have chosen the same letter (see picture attachment).
When the time is up, the facilitator will ring the bell. Participants will sit down, and the facilitator will announce a letter.
Participants who have that letter on their notecard for that round must stand up. They are “infected.”
The "infected" participants must answer a “virus” icebreaker question (the “virus” question) to everyone.
See the attached powerpoint for reference.
After all the infected participants have answered the “virus” question, the next round will begin.
The facilitator will announce that the infected letter may not be used again for the duration of the entire activity after the conclusion of each round.
Repeat the above steps for as many rounds as needed with different “contagion” and “virus” questions each subsequent round.
Twists:
Have the chosen letter(s) be the immune people, so everyone without the chosen letter(s) would be the "infected" ones.
Have the participants who had the chosen letter(s) sitting to their immediate right and left also be "infected."
Have the participants who had the chosen letter(s) choose anyone else who is not standing to take their place.
Allow participants to choose any letter to write on other people’s notecards instead of using the same one every time.
This would increase the chance of people getting the “infected” letter.
Notes
To save space, participants should write small and next to each other (see picture attachment).
The next round of the activity should just use the row below.
If the chosen “infected” letter is not on anyone’s notecard, then the facilitator will choose another letter.
The letter that doesn’t work can still be in the game for later rounds. Only the letters that produce “infected” participants should be removed from subsequent rounds.
