Collapsed topics format

Lots of Moodle modules at Brookes are using the 'collapsed topics' format. Below are some tips on how to adjust this format.

You can change the course format by going to the 'Administration' block, click on 'Edit settings'. Scroll down to 'COURSE FORMAT', and reveal the options by clicking on the little grey arrow in front of 'COURSE FORMAT':

The screen image to the left shows all the options for the 'collapsed topics' course format of your moodle section.

You can safely ignore most of the options. The ones you might want to attend to are:

  • Number of sections (default is 12)

  • Set elements (most flexible: No additions)

  • Set structure (most flexible: Topic)

  • Set the toggle text alignment

You can also select a colour for the section 'bars' - in the example to the left the default colour has been changed to red.

We recommend this format because it prevents users from endless scrolling, when all topics except for the currently active one are collapsed.

Additionally, this format can be adjusted to different requirements, for example if you wish to get rid of the word 'Toggle' you can choose one of the options which indicate 'no toggle word'. We worked out a combination of settings which seems to work well, please see below. If you want dates to be added automatically, you would go to 'Set structure' and change this setting from 'Topic' to 'Week'. Obviously we cannot recommend one setting for all, because each Module will require a different combination of settings.

The above screen image of the settings shows a combination of settings which is flexible yet simple.

You can find more information on the collapsed topic format in the moodle documentation:
