Linking to Sections

The basic structure of a Moodle course is hierarchical, showing all sections in a potentially long list. This means there's a danger of the so-called 'death by scrolling'. There are different ways of avoiding this:

New in Moodle 2.4 is the 'collapsed topics' format, which is explained on the page Using Collapsed Topics format. If your course is straightforward and not more than the average 12 sections it should be the preferred solution, because the option with 'quick links' (see below) seems to cause problems for mobile devices.

Another option is to create quick links within a 'label' in Moodle (label = standard resource in moodle) to all the sections in your Moodle course. This is especially suitable for very long and complex courses.

The most important thing when setting up a Moodle course in a less hierarchical way is planning the structure of your course in advance. All items in Moodle have a unique link. This also applies to sections, and it means that you can put the links to your sections into a table at the top of all your sections, like this for example:

The image above shows the editor and how the 'linking to sections' has been achieved by adding a table, and inserting images and links.

Links to sections can either be added to the top area of your moodle course, or you can put them in a label. The links can also be added without using a table, and by using buttons for the links. A very useful free online button creator can be found at http://dabuttonfactory.com/ Tip: Make sure all your buttons are the same size when creating them.

For an example 'using buttons for section links' see image to the right.

The buttons are uploaded as images into a label.

Each button is linked to one of the sections using the following link format:

https://moodle.brookes.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=xxxxx&section=x

id=xxxxx: please replace xxxxx with module ID

section=x: please replace x with number of section

When clicking on one of the buttons the section it links to becomes the 'active' section and shows under the top section of your moodle course.
