Multipe Choice Questions in Moodle

Moodle offers a lot of flexibility for this frequently used question type. When choosing a question type, the list shows two different Multiple Choice questions. The screen shot below tries to explain the difference. Please note that they are represented by different icons. The second option in the list is the more commonly used variety.

Important notes:

When setting up a 'All-or-Nothing Multiple Choice' question the system adds a 'Select one or more' automatically. Therefore it is not advisable to use it it for questions which explicitly ask for ONE option, for example 'which ONE of the following is TRUE about ...'.

When setting up a multiple choice question (second option, more commonly used) to allow for multiple correct answers it is - in theory - possible to reach the full score by simply ticking all options. This can be avoided by using negative marking, i.e. giving points for correct answers and deducting points for incorrect answers.

If you 'inherit' a set of questions from someone else the question icons allow you to easily identify the multiple choice format:
