Quiz - Basics

Moodle Quiz - Basics

Summary: There are two parts to creating a quiz. Setting up questions can be done independently of setting up a quiz (which is the ‘shell’ for the questions). The questions that make up a quiz are stored in a question bank. They can be used in more than one quiz.

Setting up a quiz follows the usual routine for setting up an activity (see also Quiz - setting it up):

    • Click on ‘Turn editing on’.

    • Open ‘Add an activity or resource’

    • Choose ‘Quiz’ from the list of activities

    • Give the quiz a title, then ‘save and display’

Please note: The ‘Edit quiz’ button will only show in this position BEFORE you added the first question to the quiz. Once you have added questions and return to the quiz at a later stage you will NOT see it any longer. To edit the quiz (i.e. add questions etc) you will need to click on the quiz link and then on ‘Edit quiz’ in the Administration block:

All questions you create are kept in the Moodle Question Bank.

This is one of several reasons why we recommend a 2 step process for setting up a quiz, which involves creating questions in a separate process that can be done BEFORE creating the quiz.

Step 1: Create and organize questions in your module's Question bank.

Step 2: Create a new Quiz activity in the section where you want the quiz to appear.

1 Question bank

On the main page of your module, go to the Administration block - Course Administration, and click on Question bank. Question bank also has a menu which you can open:

The question bank allows you to add questions, if you have not yet added any categories, it will use the default category for the module

Clicking on ‘Create a new question …’ will bring up the choice of question formats in Moodle:

Moodle offers a lot of different question formats in alphabetical order. The most commonly used format is Multiple Choice. A short explanation for each format is provided in the right column, and for answers to questions during the set-up process you can use the question mark next to each item. Below is an example from the Gap Fill Question format:

You can put your questions into different categories which you can set up when clicking on ‘Categories’ in the Question bank sub-menu. You will see the categories for your course, for the programme, and for your faculty. Below these categories, you can add a new category:

Once you have created the question you want to use for a quiz, you will need to create the quiz ‘shell’ via ‘Add an activity’. The settings for each quiz are very flexible - the image below shows the current default settings for a formative quiz, with a summative quiz you would most likely want to 'un-tick' all (or most) of the 'review' options:
