Badges are a kind of 'digital reward system'. Badges can be collected as a kind of digital evidence for achievements, and they can be added to open collections, like for example the 'Mozilla Backpack', or added to personal websites.

Finishing a course or a set of courses with a minimum grade or by a certain date.
Completing a number of fields in the user account profile
Issued manually by a specific role (for example 'Module Leader')
Course level badges:

Completing an activity
Or manually issued by a role
Badges can be set up and managed via the Administration block. You start with Add a new badge
