Reflective logs can be set up in different ways in Moodle. One way was using the assignment facility and setting up an online text assignment for each individual student. We also used another more labour intensive way, with a standard forum set up in a way that each individual student has his/her own forum using separate groups, where each student is in her/his group of one.

Now we have a new forum type, which lends itself to create individual learning logs for students, called Forum NG.

In 'Add an activity or resource', choose ForumNG, and click Add.

Give the forum a name, and select the option for individual students:

Add your forum introduction, for example 'This is a place for you where you can write down your reflections on different topics. Only you and your tutors can see this.'

There are also settings available which allow forum posts to be rated, and even graded. Using these settings depends entirely on the purpose of the forum. This might be more suitable for example when this forum type is set to 'general use' and requires students to post something related to assignments.

Tutors can use the 'reply' function to comment on students' contributions.

You might want to explain to your students that the forum will request them to 'add a new discussion', where 'discussion' simply refers to a new contribution made to the learning log.
