DISCUSSION
The following steps are a compilation of the most often used and well-tested methods of settling disputes.
Explain the statements in each number and show how they contribute to ensuring PEACE.
1. Define the conflict. What is the source of conflict? Focus on the problem, and not the person with the
problem. If you do that, a climate of cooperation, not competition, is enhanced.
2. Work on active listening. Conflicts become worse when the parties concerned try to talk more rather than listen to each other. Listening well is an act of caring.
3. Choose an appropriate place to resolve the conflict. Move away from the battleground. Too many emotions are revived there.
4. Start with what are the “doables.” Restoration of peace cannot be done quickly. If it took a long time for the dispute to begin, it will take time to end it.
5. Develop forgiveness skills. Forgiveness looks forward, vengeance looks backward.
