B. Read this paragraph
Pastillas is a favorite delicacy in the Philippines. It is quite easy to make. First, gather all the ingredients.
These are 2
4 cup skimmed milk, 1 cup condensed milk, and 1 cup white sugar.
To start, mix skimmed milk and condensed milk in a bowl. Next, portion the mixture into a fist-sized ball and roll it
similar to a sausage. Then, let the roll rest for 10 minutes. Afterward, slice the roll crosswise. Finally, coat each pastillas slice with sugar. Now, you can enjoy the delectable pastillas.
What can you say about the paragraph that you read? After reading it, do you think you can now make your own pastillas? What helped you?
In giving instructions, you can use imperative sentences. We have learned that imperative sentences are used if we want to make requests or give commands. This kind of sentence can either end with a period or an exclamation point. But in giving instructions, you cannot be forceful, so you can use a
period at the end of each sentence.
Examples:
Gather all ingredients. Mix skimmed milk and condensed milk in a bowl.
Portion the mixture into a fist-sized ball.
The directions you will give will serve as a lead or guide so the person you are talking to or your audience will know where to go or what to do. Therefore, your directions should be:
Easy to understand
Use words that are familiar to the person you are talking to.
Precise
Your instructions should be accurate and specific. For example, you are giving instructions on how to cook a Filipino dish such as dinuguan. You
have to be specific with your instructions that they can’t stir the vinegar until it boils. Otherwise, the vinegar will be uncooked and it will not taste
good. That is why being precise is important.
Logical
Your directions should follow a certain pattern. That pattern should be logical to how you want something to be achieved. This is where your transitional words play a vital role. They help your audience follow the series of instructions that you are giving from the first one until the final one. Examples of transitional words are first, next, then, after, finally, etc.
You can use declarative sentences to give information that can support the instructions that you are giving. Isn’t it that a declarative sentence tells or states something? It can be used to give information like the opening statement of the paragraph. It states that pastillas is a favorite delicacy in the
Philippines. It is a declarative sentence, and at the same time, it informs. It can only end with a period.
Examples:
Pastillas is made up of milk and sugar.
Its taste is quite delectable.
This delicacy is easy to make.
Remember:
Imperative sentences are used to give directions and they end with either a period or an exclamation point.
Declarative sentences are used to give information. They end with a period.

Exercise 2: Find a partner in the classroom. Tell your partner about your favorite part of the house where you feel most comfortable. Is it your bedroom,
your living room, the bathroom, or the kitchen? From your main door, give him/her instructions on how to get to your favorite part of the
house while he/she tries to draw your description in the box below. To check if your directions are comprehensible and precise, he/she must be
able to trace his/her way from the main door to your favorite room or part of the house. Afterward, check the “map” that he/she has done and see if it is correct.
