DISCUSSION:
Calmness is a disposition in life that allows a person to take control of himself or herself amid whatever
issues and challenges that confront him or her. Calmness is an attitude that creates a life of moderation, never
overdoing things or ever lacking in another.
Calmness is a perspective in life that helps a person to endure anything and everything that attempts to overwhelm him or her. Finally, calmness is a power of the self that
provides the energy to sustain everything meaningful in a person’s life.
Congratulations! Together with the whole class, you have been commissioned to take a trip as storm chasers.
Your important mission is to study the atmospheric condition and the phenomena around the region. At the same time, you are tasked to evaluate and interpret meteorological data, collected by surface and air weather stations, satellites, and radar sites. Be ready to prepare reports and later on present forecasts for public and other uses.
A storm chaser’s job is unique and exciting yet also dangerous. You must always observe safety rules and tips.
As part of the job, everyone is given a chaser’s car. Choose below which one you prefer. Each car bears the latest
tracking and reading equipment. Make proper use of them. Your vehicles are so modern they can be used on land, in
air, and even on water. Have fun and be safe.
Once you have chosen your preferred vehicle, the next material you would need is a map. Be able to read the
different signs and symbols and use them to lead you on your way.
Now, you are ready for the trip. You have three destinations: first, the Pacific Ocean right after the Cape Horn;
second, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), known to seamen and sailors as the doldrums; and finally, the
ultimate destination, the eye of the storm.
Keep hold of a record book where you need to jot down important notes and observations. You will also be given
guide questions.
Trip No. 1 (From Cape Horn to the Pacific)
1. Where is Cape Horn located? Where did Cape Horn get its name?
2. How would you describe the weather condition at Cape Horn?
3. What ocean lies beyond Cape Horn? Who gave the name to the ocean? Why was it given that name?
Trip No. 2 (The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ))
1. What is the Intertropical Convergence Zone? What does it look like? What does it consist of?
2. Why is the zone also known to sailors then as the doldrums? How would you describe the condition in this
zone/area?
3. Given the condition inside the ITCZ, why is it also associated with the birth of typhoons?
You can never control what goes on outside yourself. However, your outside world need not be the same as
your inside world. Life, difficult as it may be, is always presenting new opportunities to tap our inner potentials
and to strengthen our spirit. Our perspective becomes broader, and as a result, it necessarily fosters growth.
Learning how to appreciate and to harness the “calm” must be part of anyone’s task and is truly a worthy goal.
Calmness allows you to live in the present where you can invest all your effort and energy by drawing from
your rich resources of talents, potentials, and skills. In the same way, you may lose your power and center when
your energy is wrapped up in someone else’s problem outside of yourself. The essential ingredient to remain
calm and centered is drawing from your own inner strength and power.

REAL-LIFE APPLICATION:
Calmness is not just the absence of noise. It is a disposition, an attitude, and a perspective a person takes even amid the noise. In that calmness, the person draws from his or her rich resources of true courage and enduring
patience that brings out the best in him or her, the best in the human person, and the best in all of us.
What should you do during times of calamities?
EVALUATION:
The students will answer the activities after the lesson.
