A. Read the following sentences. Can you tell what kind of sentences are the following?
1. Stand properly for the Philippine National Anthem.
2. My nephews from Canada can still sing the Lupang Hinirang quite fluently.
3. Do you still remember our national pledges?
4. Wow, you can still remember it!
5. Bunny recently heard the new version of the Panatang Makabayan from her niece.
6. Oh, I didn’t know it has a new version!
7. Can you teach me our two national pledges?
8. Read and understand these pledges.
9. When do you usually recite these pledges?
10. Let us always show our love for our country.
B. Let us review the different kinds of sentences so that we can use them properly.
You can also use an imperative sentence in making a request. Imperative sentences, as we have learned earlier, are used if you want to state a command or request. The difference between the two is the use of please or kindly in the sentence. When we make a request, we add either of these words to be more polite. As for a command, you are asking someone directly to do something.
Examples:
Command: Go to your room.
Request: Please go to your room.
Besides asking for permission and making a request, it is essential to take note of how to respond to questions.
In responding to questions, remember to:
1. listen to the question
It only makes sense that in order to give the right response, we need to listen to the question.
Example:
Question: Do you mind if I sit here?
Answer: Yes, I don’t mind. (incorrect)
What’s wrong with this example? The question was, “Do you mind if I sit here?” If you say yes, that means you mind and that person can’t sit there. If you listened carefully, you should have said no. This means you don’t mind if he/she sits there.
2. respond directly
When someone asks you a question, you need to respond directly. If the question is answerable by yes or no, then start your response with either of the two. Then, you can explain your answer. If the question is not answerable by yes or no, just answer the question straightforwardly and in a complete sentence.
Examples:
Question: Are you a Filipino?
Answer: Yes, I am a Filipino.
Question: What is your favorite Filipino food?
Answer: My favorite Filipino food is chicken/pork
adobo.
3. focus
You must understand that a question is asked because there is a need to be fulfilled. It can be a need to get information, to clarify a piece of information, or to ask permission. Whatever that may be, a response is vital. Therefore, the person being asked should focus on the question so that he/she can ensure that the question is answered thoroughly.
