William Freeman

1911 - 2000

William Freeman was born on May 1, 1911 and came from a hunting family. He was the elder brother of Grand National-winning jockey Arthur Freeman (1926-1988).

Unlike his younger brother, Willie Freeman, sometimes known as ‘Bid’ Freeman, rode on the Flat and scored by far his biggest success when still an apprentice, winning the 1927 Ebor Handicap on Cap-a-Pie for Newmarket trainer Frank Butters, coming with a late challenge to beat Jack Sirett’s mount Poet by half a length.

Having completed his apprenticeship, he held a full licence for the 1929 and 1930 seasons.

William Freeman died in 2000. His nephew, George Freeman, Arthur’s son, was born in 1967 and is the Member of Parliament for Mid-Norfolk.
