Matthew Feakes

1908 - 1998

Matthew William Imari Feakes was born at North Walsham, Norfolk, on September 5, 1908, and was apprenticed to Harvey Leader.

His first winner was Starless at Leicester on December 2, 1929.

He finished fourth in the 1940 Grand National on Symaethis and later successfully trained before retiring in 1966.

Jockey Jimmy Lindley was his son-in-law.

Matthew's best win came on Belted Hero in the 1935 Becher Chase.

He died on April 18, 1998, aged 89.
