John Frisby

(c1813-1866)

John ‘Richard’ Frisby was a successful steeplechase jockey during the mid-19th century when the sport of steeplechasing was slowly becoming more widely recognised.

The best horses he rode were Peter Simple, True Blue and Duenna. His most important victories were the Metropolitan Chase on Maria Day, the Newport Pagnell Chase on Mahomed, the Doncaster Chase on Rachel, the Louth Chase on Hope, the Leamington Chase on Lucky Neal, and the Stourton Chase on Peter Simple.

He twice finished second in the Grand National, on Peter Simple in 1845 and Maria Day in 1851.

His career was ended when his mount Kearney fell in a hurdle race at Coventry in 1852, in which he received spinal injuries. He then became a publican, running pubs in Northampton (Knightley Arms), Rugby and, finally, Warwick (Bull’s Head). His daughter Emeline married jockey Arthur Edwards.

John died at The Bull's Head, Warwick, on October 4, 1866, aged 53
