John Flynn rode just one winner under National Hunt rules when Eastgate scored a narrow victory in the Tockwith Novices’ Hurdle at Wetherby on November 3, 1945. Only a short head separated the winner from Coronation Laddie, ridden by Tony Doyle.

It was the five-year-old’s first race over jumps. He was next seen winning over fences, again at Wetherby, but John had been replaced in the saddle by Jack Cooke.
