Roy Fry rode over jumps for several seasons during the 1970s and had two wins. Associated with the Lewes stable of Tom Gate, his first ride was not the happiest of experiences, as his mount Buster Boy, was in fourth place and beaten when knocked over at the last flight of the Wittering Opportunity Selling Handicap Hurdle at Fontwell Park on February 9, 1972.
It was not until August 17, 1973 that Roy was able to open his account when Bankruptcy had an easy victory in the Streat Selling Handicap Hurdle at Plumpton, winning by a distance.
Roy kept the ride on Bankruptcy and was placed three times in their next four outings before striking again at Wye on January 14, 1974, landing the Tenterton Opportunity Selling Handicap Hurdle by ten lengths.
There were no more victories, although he did not have his last ride until February 14, 1977, when Morelia finished eighth of 23 starters in the West Park Novices’ Handicap Hurdle at Wolverhampton.
