David Foster

1935 - 2008


David Charles Foster was born on April 21, 1935, the second eldest of four jumps jockey brothers. He served his apprenticeship with Major Bay Powell (1950-52) and Major Michael Pope (1952-60).

David rode his first winner, Phariza, on the Flat at Newmarket on April 18, 1951. His first winner over jumps was gained on Havall at Wolverhampton on December 27, 1952.

On March 25, 1955, he married Sybil Jacks: she gave him one son, David Kevin & two daughters, Christine and Sybil.

He rode a total of 33 winners, his most important victory being the 1960 Lancashire Chase at Manchester on Eternal. However, he regarded Cephalonian, on which he won, as the best he rode.

He lived at 9, Moss Lane, Cuddington, Cheshire.

David Foster died on January 31, 2008, aged 72.
