Glen French

Zimbabwean jockey Glen French was born on May 17, 1959. He rode in Britain for three seasons in the mid-1980s, recording totals of one winner in 1985, ten in 1986 and seven in 1987.

His first winner (1985) was Ala Malick at Newmarket in the EBF Blue Peter Stakes.

He scored his biggest two British successes aboard Pat Haslam’s All Fair in 1986, firstly when winning the historic Ripon Rowels on August 25. Ripon was once famous for its spurs and spur rowels, after which the race is named. Each year, the winner traditionally receives a silver replica of a Ripon spur, once praised by royalty, and by the ancient saying: “As true as Ripon rowels”.

Glen’s second win on All Fair came in the Dick Peacock Handicap at Ayr’s Western Meeting on September 17, 1986.

He returned to Zimbabwe after the 1987 season, marking the end of his two-season stint in Britain.
