Humphrey Foster

(1916 - 1977)


Humphrey Horsfall Foster was born in West Bromwich in 1916. He scored his biggest success when winning the 1935 Chester Cup on Damascus for trainer George Lambton. Carrying just 7st 1lb, 10/1 shot Damascus made every yard of the running to win by a length from the 11/4 favourite Cecil, the mount of Tommy Weston.

Humphrey married the daughter of jockey Billy Griggs in March 1943. During the war he served in the R.A.F. and was awarded the D.F.C.

He died in 1977.
