Hugh Falloon

1873 -

Hugh Falloon, widely known as Pat, was born in Liverpool in 1873 and was the son of Henry Falloon, a hay and straw dealer from Bury.

Hugh, in 1888, was apprenticed to Mr J. Ryan.

He won two consecutive runnings of the Ayr Gold Cup, on Reverie (1888) and Dazzle (1889). Dazzle went on to complete a hat-trick of Ayr Gold Cup victories (1889-1891), ridden by a different jockey each time.

After a long and painful illness, Hugh Falloon died of consumption at Overmeire, Belgium, on July 26, 1905. His lung trouble was probably hereditary.

He had come to Belgium 14 years prior to his death as stable jockey to M. C. Lienart, who then had the most powerful Flat stable in the country. Increasing weight, however, compelled him to turn his attention to jumping, and he became a most accomplished steeplechase rider.
