Henry Farrant

1864 - 1946

Amateur rider Henry Gatchell Farrant was born in 1864. He achieved his greatest success in the 1907 National Hunt Chase, held that year at Warwick, riding his own horse Red Hall.

They were winning the race at their third attempt, having finished third in 1904 and sixth in 1906. They were also unbeaten in five point-to-points including the 1903 and 1904 renewals of the Lady Dudley Cup.

Mr Farrant rode Red Hall in two Grand Nationals, finishing sixth in 1908 and fifteenth, after falling and remounting, in 1909.

He went on to become His Honour Judge Farrant and rode his last winner in 1923 when 59 years old. That same year he was elected President of the Pegasus Club, which had been founded in 1895 to encourage riding and hunting among members of the legal profession.

Henry Farrant died on April 16, 1946.
