Tom Foster

Thomas Albert Foster was born at Grove House, Normanton, in 1881, and, in 1895, became apprenticed to Mr Elsey. His first win was on Parcel in Haydock Park's first-ever apprentice race in August 1899.

He rode many winners for the Baumber stable, including Laffan (Osmaston Nursery at Derby) and the Warwickshire Handicap on the same horse.

After two years with Mr J. McCall at Dunbar the increase in weight to 7 st 9 lb., together with the extended use of apprentices with the 5 lb allowance, led to his decision, in August 1904, to try South Africa. In July 1905 he won on seven of his thirteen rides.

In January 1906, he won the £2,500 Johannesburg Handicap on Cades. This immediately followed his clever victory in the Cape Town Metropolitan.

He last held a licence in 1920. He died in 1934.
