Brian Farr rode over jumps for a couple of years in the first half of the 1970s and had one win, and that was on a disqualification.
His first mount, Fleet Leader, came in seventh of ten finishers, having been prominent early, in the Summer Handicap Hurdle on June 2, 1972, the final day of the season at Stratford.
His sole victory came in a match for the Shorncliffe Selling Hurdle at Folkestone on September 12, 1973. His mount was the 10-year-old Kelly’s Image, trained locally by John Long. Brian had already finished second on him in a three-runner race at Fontwell Park the previous month. His sole opponent, making his seasonal debut, was the four-year-old Remount, ridden by leading jockey David Mould.
Kelly’s Image led until the second-last flight when Remount took over and quickened on the run-in to win easily by a length and a half. However, he had veered right and hampered Kelly’s Image at the final hurdle and was disqualified following a stewards’ enquiry. Remount was undoubtedly the better horse but Brian Farr had ended up ridding the winner.
He rode Kelly’s Image on his next four starts and was placed in all of them, but the fifth did not so well, as they were well beaten in the Ardingley Selling Hurdle at Plumpton on January 9, 1974 after leading at halfway. That was Brian’s final ride.
