Born in 1952, Edwin Richard Fletcher, known as Eddie, had his first ride over jumps at Wolverhampton on May 22, 1969, when Lyford Cay finished eighth of 13 starters in the Netherton Handicap Hurdle. The five-year-old had already won one race and would go on to win five more, but Eddie had only one success to come, and that would not be for almost three years.
It finally came at Haydock Park on January 7, 1972 in the Warrington Handicap Hurdle, when Estate Car took the lead three flights from home and ran on to beat Feel Free by a length and a half. The six-year-old was trained by Denys Smith and had been second twice that season, but this was the first occasion on which Eddie had ridden him.
Sadly, despite having waited so long to ride a winner, there were to be no more, and his career was over just a few a weeks later, his final ride being at Market Rasen on March 4, 1972, when Sword Thrust finished fourth in the Kesteven Handicap Hurdle.
