Jimmy Farrell

National Hunt jockey Jimmy Farrell rode exactly 50 winners over jumps in Britain between 1926 and 1939 and took part in two Grand Nationals.

He had his first ride in public on a horse named Tully, who fell in the Experimental Handicap Chase at Sandown Park on February 5, 1926. However, he did not have to wait long to gain compensation, notching his first success later that month on Shakespeare in the Rusper Maiden Hurdle at Gatwick on February 26, 1926.

Jimmy enjoyed his most successful season in 1929/30 with 11winners, the only time he attained a double-figure score.

He rode in two Grand Nationals. He was one of a record 66 assorted amateurs and professionals to take their chance in 1929. His mount, 200-1 longshot Herbert’s Choice, was among the many fallers. In 1930, he pulled up 100-1 outsider Soldier’s Joy.

Jimmy rode his last winner on 3-1 chance Sir Bertie, trained by Peter Thrale at Woolgars Farm, West Horsley, in the Cambridgeshire Chase at Huntingdon on Easter Monday, April 10, 1939, beating leading amateur John Hislop on the evens favourite Woodcock by two lengths.

He rode for the last time in the Ferney Hurdle at Ludlow on May 23, 1940, on Le Chicaneur. They finished fourth but were promoted to third place when the winner was disqualified for “general interference”.
