Jeff Farrar

Apprentice Jeff Farrar enjoyed his one day in the sun when riding his sole winner on Hoyland at Ripon on Saturday, July 26, 1969.

Jeffrey Farrar was born in 1950 and weighed only 5st 10lb when becoming apprenticed to Wetherby trainer Tommy Shedden in 1966.

He’d increased to 7st 2lb by 1969 when Shedden put him up on his first (and only) winner on Hoyland in the 1m 2f Wakefield Handicap at Ripon. Having been in rear early, Hoyland made ground two furlongs out, led inside the final furlong and ran on to beat Brian Connorton’s mount Brackenby by half a length. Jeff had a total of 57 rides that year, but just that one winner to show for it.

Having completed his apprenticeship at the end of 1970, he held a full jockey’s in 1971 and 1972, by which time his weight had soared to 8st 7lb, considerably reducing his options. He had his final ride in public when finishing unplaced on Geoffrey’s Grey in a Redcar maiden on April 22, 1972. He relinquished his licence the following month.
