Born circa 1868, Thomas James French won the 1895 Eclipse Stakes on Le Justicier.

He afterwards moved to Chantilly, France to join John William Webb, who had trained his Eclipse winner. After riding there for many years, he then rode in Italy and Romania before returning to Chantilly.

He died in Chantilly in August 1910 aged 42. His early death was said to be attributable to continual wasting. He left £2,745.
