George Francis

Article by Chas Hammond

George Francis, who was known as ‘The Drover’, won the 1843 Northumberland Plate on Moss Trooper.

His other big wins included the Manchester Cup on Colchicum and the Newton Cup on Fair Louisa, both in 1840.

Despite his success as a jockey, he was described as being “rather poor” when he died on October 19, 1862.

On June 8, 1842, he married Anne Priestlay, a farmer's daughter, at Brodsworth, near Doncaster.
