Peter Fox

Peter Joseph Fox was a successful northern-based amateur rider during the 1950s and 60s. He never rode more than six winners in a season but his longevity resulted in him riding a total of 46 under National Hunt rules over a period of 16 years.

He rode his first winner at steeplechasing’s headquarters, Cheltenham, on novice hurdler Limber Hill on November 11, 1953. He won on him again at Doncaster ten days later and at Wetherby seven days after that, returning to Cheltenham on New Year’s Eve to win the Long Distance Handicap Hurdle. Limber Hill would himself return to Cheltenham in 1956 to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup, partnered by Jimmy Power.

Peter’s other two winners that season were gained on handicap hurdler Cobden, owned and trained by Grimsby permit holder Louis Furman. He won twice at Market Rasen and did so again the following season. Furman also gave Peter the leg up on another winner, Easy Payment at Nottingham.

He won four times on Guy Cunard’s selling chaser Provident, forcing a dead-heat on the last occasion. However, he then went over two years without a win until Naval Law ended the drought when scoring at Birmingham in January 1961. He then rode Naval Law to win the Tote Investors Handicap Chase – giving him the biggest win of his career – at Hereford two months later.

Preston farmer and permit trainer John Morphet supplied Peter with his next seven winners, spread over three seasons. Peter then rode Urchin Bank to win the Simonside Cup Amateur Riders’ Hurdle on the final day’s racing at Rothbury on April 10, 1965.

He rode just one winner in both of the next two seasons: Eddie O’Keeffe’s chaser Iras in the Gosforth Park Amateur Cup, and John Cousins’ Never Look Back in an amateur riders’ chase at Catterick. However, less than a month after winning on Never Look Back, Peter broke a leg when that same horse fell at Nottingham on February 6, 1967.

Penrith owner-trainer Joseph Bowness was another to supply Peter with winners, five of them on handicap hurdler Sea Romance and two on chaser Proud Chimes, including an amateur riders’ race at Cheltenham in December 1968. Sea Romance gave Peter his final victory at Kelso on October 25, 1969.
