Patrick Fitzgerald

Patrick Fitzgerald was attached to J.C.Cockton's stable at Little Stukeley, Huntingdon. He had served his apprenticeship with J.J.Parkinson at the Curragh and rode many winners over the jumps in Ireland. For a season he rode for J.Harper's stable at Middleham before becoming stable jockey and head lad at Cockton's.

Patrick's most notable success was when he won the National Hunt Handicap Steeplechase at Cheltenham (2.40) on March 8 in 1934. Riding the 4/1 favourite Francolino, he won by three-quarters of a length.

On 9 February, 1939, he was travelling in a horse-box to the races with his wife when it was in collision with a furniture van at Stamford.

Aged 29, Patrick failed to recover from his injuries. He had been married only a few months.
