Alfred French

c1839 - 1876

Alfred French was born in Liverpool circa 1839, the elder brother of fellow jockey Tom French. His big wins included the

1858 Lincolnshire Handicap on Vandermulin and the 1858 Stewards Cup on Glenmasson.

Alfred French rode for Joseph Dawson before leaving to ride in France in August 1864. He suffered a bad fall at Marseilles.

He died in Paris on April 23, 1876, aged only 36.

(Note: The Breedon Book of Horse Racing Records incorrectly lists Tom French as the rider of Vandermulin and Glenmasson, whereas in fact they were both ridden by Alfred French. Tom French did not ride his first winner until 1860, two years after those 1858 Lincolnshire Handicap and Stewards Cup victories.)

Vandermulin, owned by Edward Rawson Clarke, was a brown colt by Van Tromp out of Miss Julia Bennett. It started at 12-1 for the 1858 Derby, won by Ellington. Ridden by Charlton, it finished fifth.
