Leslie Fisher

Leslie Fisher was born in 1941. He served his apprenticeship with Horace Cousins at Scotforth, near Lancaster, starting in 1957, but failed to ride a winner on the Flat. When rising weight became a problem, he took out a National Hunt jockey’s licence for the 1961/62 campaign and continued to ride over jumps for the following two seasons.

When Horace Cousins died in 1963, his son John took over the running of the stable. John achieved his first training success under NH rules at Newcastle on December 7, 1963, when Royal Flambo won Division One of the Warkwirth Novices’ Hurdle. In doing so, Royal Flambo also provided 22-year-old Leslie Fisher with his first winner.

Sadly, that proved to be the sole success of Leslie’s career. John Cousins was a very competent amateur rider and had ridden plenty of winners for his father. He began combining riding with training and was soon on board most of his string. That left little opportunity for Leslie, who did not renew his licence the following season.
