Fred Finlay

Born at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on January 22, 1865, Fred Finlay rode his first winner in 1883 and, in both 1893 & 1896, rode exactly 100 winners.

His big wins included the 1895 Champion Stakes, 1895 Ebor, 1899 Stewards Cup & the Ayr Gold Cup (twice).

He won the first race run at the inaugural meeting of Birmingham's Bromford Bridge racecourse, the Midland Welter Handicap, on Philology on June 14, 1895.

Fred died in Torquay, Devon, on December 8, 1909, aged 44.

He is named as Finley on his death certificate.

He left estate valued £18,986. 5s. 8d.

He rode 4 winners at Newton on Monday, July 25, 1897.
