Philip Fenton

Amateur rider Philip Fenton was born in Ireland on November 3, 1964. He rode a total of 338 winners under National Hunt rules and was champion amateur in the 1988-89 National Hunt season with 18 winners.

The best horse he rode was Donoli, which he partnered just once, when winning the Captain Christy Beginners’ Chase at Clonmel on November 1, 1996. Another good one was Ventana Canyon, whom he rode four times, winning twice and finishing second twice. The two wins comprised a Leopardstown bumper in March 1994 and a Navan novice chase in December 1995.

He achieved his biggest British victory aboard the Eddie O’Grady-trained Loving Around in the 1996 National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham.

He later trained successfully, based in County Tipperary, his best horse being Dunguib, winner of the Champion Bumper at the 2009 Cheltenham Festival plus two Grade 1 and two Grade 2 hurdle races in Ireland. He also trained Last Instalment to land the Irish Gold Cup in 2014.

However, only a few days after that Irish Gold Cup triumph, the news broke that he was facing criminal charges of possessing banned substances. Those included 1kg of Nitrotain and a 20ml bottle of Ilium Stanabolic, both of which contain anabolic steroids. It resulted in him being banned for three years.

When the ban ended, Philip renewed his licence and had his first runner since December 2014 when Secret Cargo lined up in a Killarney bumper in July 2018. Secret Cargo also became his first winner since returning when obliging at 25-1 at Tramore on New Year’s Day 2019.
