Christopher Flynn

1894-1972

Article by Alan Trout

Although National Hunt jockey Christopher Flynn started promisingly with four within three months in the closing weeks of 1922, he managed only more.

Born in 1894, he had his first ride at Hexham on October 4, 1922, when finishing unplaced on Jaboulay in the Yarridge Hurdle. His second ride, seven days later, went much better when Vale Of Realm took the Windlestone Handicap Hurdle at Sedgefield, beating Duncarthra, ridden by the experienced Arthur Waudby, by a length.

Two weeks later he recorded a double at Wetherby, with Jaboulay winning the Cowthorpe Hurdle and Vale Of Realm following up his Sedgefield success by landing the Bickerton Handicap Hurdle. There was one more before the year ended, with Arabian Knight taking the Bishop Middleham Optional Selling Chase at Sedgefield on December 27 by a head from Short Knock, the mount of John Hamilton.

Christopher and Arabian Night combined to win again at Wetherby on Easter Monday, April 2, 1923, beating two rivals to take the Micklethwaite Chase. The following day they finished second to Drumree in the Leeds Chase.

After his riding career ended, Christopher Flynn trained under both rules for some years. He died in 1972.
